Production Report #2

This week, things moved at a comfortable pace. I expect it to ramp up quickly in the coming weeks. It seems that I am ahead of schedule in terms of the timeline that I initially set. I scheduled my first zoom meeting with my social impact advisor for Monday, 2/12/24. I plan to have a general discussion on AI topics and request guidance on types of AI creations that I should make so I can present them to my participants.

As of right now, all my participants are willing to take part in my project. One, however, is unfortunately dealing with health-related issues. Therefore, the situation might force me to pivot in a new direction and involve someone new. I’ll have to gauge how it goes in the coming days and find a quick alternate participant. So far that is my biggest challenge as I want to make sure I can count on everyone to follow through with their commitment. Thankfully, their sincere interest in the project allows me to have an open dialogue with them so that we can plan out a day and time that fits both our schedules. I am also pleased that I have a clearer idea of where I want to go with this as diving into the topic of AI is undoubtedly a learning experience for me.

As for this upcoming week, I will continue to learn about what’s going on in the AI world and gain insight from new perspectives. A podcast I watched recently involved talk about an invention where a person can essentially wear AI. The device is from Humane and takes the form of a small pin that acts like Siri from iOS or Alexa from Amazon. It can do things such as interpret languages, summarize text messages, analyze nutritional facts of food items when held in hand, mini projection screen interface, and read certain facts and information are amongst the things demoed. Anyone who sees this might feel that it is still an underdeveloped concept as the information offered is not entirely accurate. The idea though is to create a device that is screenless but gives you all the benefits of using a smartphone and more. The consensus so far is that smartphones are still going to be more useful in  carrying out everyday tasks, at least for now.

Another thing that the podcast hosts talked about was the emergence of deepfakes which are AI videos that you can overlay on someone’s face. Essentially, you can put any celebrities’ face over a clip of yours. The hosts concluded, that currently, video deepfakes are not powerful enough to completely blur the line between real and not real. But in the meantime, it is worth keeping an eye on as technology progresses.

They also discussed the partnership of AI music with YouTube. As YouTube states on their blog, “Our goal is to partner with the music industry to empower creativity in a way that enhances our joint pursuit of responsible innovation.” The input by many big name artists have are valued through this process. New policies are going to be implemented as AI music tools that YouTube wants to push out have certain royalties directed toward original songwriters and creators of music. This is such a transformative time as YouTube’s response to embrace AI is turning heads as there are polarizing opinions on AI music and how that will affect copyright laws and the need for musicians, at all.

I also viewed brief videos on how ChatGPT works and I’ve learned things I never knew before. To sum it up, ChatGPT stands for (Generative Pretrained Transformer). It is not a bot that self learns in real time but rather it is pretrained by a human programmer to learn everything it is asked to do. So essentially, when you ask it to do something, it can only give you responses and information based on what it is already trained to know and not what it can find elsewhere.  Check out the images below when I asked ChatGPT how itself works.

In addition, I did some preliminary AI art renderings for my upcoming week. I decided to test out 3 separate AI art programs which include Midjourney, Image FX from Google, and Adobe Firefly. I typed in the simple prompt below and left everything to its default settings. I found the results interesting between the 3.

Prompt: “A French beagle sitting in a Parisian cafe eating her favorite food while watching people walking outside in the rain”

Adobe Firefly

ImageFX

Midjourney

Next week, the progression of my project will continue to develop as I will start my mini projects. I also have other articles and podcasts I want dive into so that I can further expand my knowledge about AI.
