Production Report #1
This is the beginning of an ambitious yet fascinating project that I will undertake this semester. I will be investigating the current landscape of AI and what that all entails moving into the future in terms of the impact on our society. The structure of my capstone project will involve three miniature projects that are done alongside research. With this series, I’ll be tasked to design and make art with the assistance of AI tools. Afterwards, I will talk with three industry level professionals from different fields to present what I created and to discuss their individual perspectives to gain further knowledge and insight.
So far, I have reached out to three individuals who have confirmed their interest in participating. These three wiling professionals all have unique backgrounds and professions. They include a senior accreditation consultant and policy writer, with twenty-five plus years of law enforcement and public safety experience, an attorney whose areas of practice include state and federal appeals, federal civil rights defense, employment law, products liability and public utility law who is self-taught in the art of photography, and a post-production professional with a psychobiology and cognitive background who entered the film industry as a freelance editor and producer.
It has been a challenge to schedule a time to interview each participant. They are busy professionals, so I need to be mindful that they are taking time out of their schedule to talk with me about my project. Having contacted all of them, it won't be an issue to communicate going foward. In the coming weeks once I get my 3 mini projects going, my schedule will become more clear and things will fall into place.
For the coming weeks, I envision myself using similar programs that I am familiar with but also experimenting with other AI software’s. An AI art program that I used before is Midjourney which produces very impressive results. I can generate different types of artwork that features diverse design styles for the interview. Along with this, I would like to experiment with Pikalabs to create animations from still images. Another thing that comes to mind is the utilization of ChatGPT which can help me write scripts and other long form of documents.

In the meantime, I have begun conducting some preliminary research to familiarize myself with the topic I will be exploring. I chose to start with a podcast episode from The Joe Rogan Experience because of his ability to ask questions from a wide range of subject matter experts and leaders. In this particular episode, the guest is Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI which created ChatGPT. Their conversation goes very in-depth about the current state of AI, how it came to be, and what can be expected in the future. Here are some of the main points that got my attention:
- AI will be a great thing but not all of it is going to be good.
- Like technological revolutions before, the emergence of AI is similar in that people are initially shocked at it's capabilities. With time, people may eventually learn to adapt to it and embrace it.
- The current state of AI can perform tasks well but not jobs that require the use of cognitive ability.
- Sam explains that, when they started the OpenAI project back in 2015, his team agreed that it would take about 15 years to develop. Fast forward to 2024, he still thinks that his prediction is accurate to how developed AI is now.
- A lot of discussion was done amongst the team about the really negative stuff that could come out of this. At each step of the developmental process, they took the steps to maintain certain levels of safety.
- Sam is optimistic that people will come together and eventually get to a place where there is one global set of rules when it comes to AI.
- Where AI is going in the future is largely up to interpretation. It is still so early to know how powerful it is and there’s no telling what will happen until it does.
- The current problems in modern day society, Sam says, only means there are more opportunities to solve these problems and improve humanity.
Next week I will begin researching and experimenting with AI and programs that I would like to use for this project. I plan on continuing to listen to more podcasts and other forms of media to gain perspectives about AI and what it means to people.
As a preview to some of the things I will be looking to work on, here is a film created mostly with the assistance of AI called Nature’s Realm.
