Production Report #4

CONCEPT OVERVIEW:

I will be exploring the general idea of how AI has affected the landscape of professional industries. The project will involve me creating 3 AI-assisted artworks and having in-depth conversations about them with 3 individuals all from different professions and backgrounds.

This week, I made some progress with respect to scheduling my interviews. I was able to pinpoint the specific week that I aim to conduct my zoom conversations with my participants involved in the project. As things stand right now, the first week in March during spring break is when I plan to have them all completed. I have been in communication with all three of my participants with one confirmed day and time and am waiting to hear back from the other two. These gains were significant as it gave me the time and energy to give attention to another important aspect, the development of the series of mini projects.

The 3 areas of AI’s impact that I am exploring are Marketing, Photography, and Filmmaking. I am very familiar with the process of photography and filmmaking but have limited knowledge and experience in Marketing. Aside from doing some independent research, the only experience I can draw upon is from a freelance project where I used a search engine optimization (SEO) marketing strategy to improve the website visibility of a small business to expand its customer reach and further develop its base.

In reading up on Google’s position on AI, I learned that it does not favor ranking AI generated content. The reason for this is it does not meet their Experience, Expertise, Authority, and Trustworthy (E-E-A-T) criteria as “AI content will never become an Experience Expert on any topic.” This further emphasizes the important role of SEO, for any business. Optimizing a site makes it easier for users to find content, services, and products they are looking for, but it is also cost-effective as it requires minimal use of paid ads or none at all to reach potential customers.

As I prepare to talk to the participant for the marketing mini project, I conducted some research on his background and learned that he holds the position of Healthcare Marketing Campaign Manager. Although I understand the general idea of marketing, I needed to gain a deeper understanding about how this position and its responsibilities are utilized in the healthcare space. One vital aspect of successful marketing is the ability of an organization to make an impact.  That key is rooted in its relationship with their customers which is what drives the interest and passion of my participant. While the process of shaping this mini project is ongoing, the information I have been gathering is contributing to the necessary forward movement.

As it pertains to marketing in AI, I have found a resource that makes me think about how AI is already being utilized in marketing and how I can model my project after what is currently being done. There are even AI programs that I never knew existed that are designed specifically for marketing purposes such as email writing. This serves as a good jumping off point in my marketing mini project.

For my photography project, I have been doing some work with the software Midjourney as it is one of the best generative AI Art programs on the web. I spent time studying my photographer participant’s portfolio and analyzed his work while noting elements of composition, lighting, and colorization, to name a few. What helped me to break his work down into easily understandable pieces was to think about how I would create these photos myself with my camera. I then took these elements of his photographs to see what Midjourney could produce. Since he takes photos of a variety of different things from landscapes to wildlife, it provided me with plenty of options to work with.

To be clear, I did not, nor ever plan to upload his photos to the AI software for references because it is not ethically right to take his artwork without his permission. My only intention is to see what the AI art software can generate just by following my instructions based off the general photo taking process.

Here are a few results that I have accomplished so far using Midjourney AI:

PROMPT: “inside of a steel mill in pittsburgh, leading lines, realistic photo, black and white, sunny day, 50mm lens”

PROMPT: “realistic photo, brown pelican, rule of thirds, lots of detail”

PROMPT: “autumn, fall colors, forest path, realistic photo”

This coming week, I’m going to choose the best art to present for which our conversation will be based on.

For the filmmaking project, I am currently doing my best to keep informed and up to date with the advances of AI. But one thing that is making huge headlines is OpenAI’s new text to video software called Sora that is jaw dropping impressive. Unfortunately, it’s not available to the public yet so I can’t use it for this project, but it might be a topic of discussion in one of my interviews. This software could quite literally flip a lot of industries upside down.

There are still many resources that I have to review but I would like to do that while I develop my projects. The general questions and structure of my conducted interviews are still a work in progress. Among the things I’m looking to ask though is their personal views and opinion on AI as it relates to their workplace, such as whether they have used it in their line of work, and would they be open to using it to assist them. I aim to further develop those questions and look to share a lot more next week.
